Centenary of the 11th/9th Cambridge Scout Group!

The 9th and 11th Cambridge Scout Groups were both founded in 1910 - we celebrate the centenary of these events this year.

The 11th/9th Cambridge Scout Group would like to invite all past members to return and celebrate a century since the registration of the two merged groups, the 11th and the 9th . The celebrations start with afternoon tea on the 15th May at the Scout and Guide Centre, Chedworth Street, Newnham where the group is based. There will be opportunities to look back through photographs and records spanning the groups' life, to meet current members of the group and catch up with old friends.

In 2007, many events around the world celebrated the centenary of Scouting's foundation in 1907. Registration of new scout groups seemed to be less efficient in those days – the records of foundation for both the 9th and the 11th groups seem to suggest they were going strong by 1910. This year marks the centenary of those registrations, but it is thought that the 2nd Cambridge group was amalgamated with the 11th at some stage. Members of the 2nd, the 9th and the 11th Cambridge groups are all invited to join the celebrations this year.

"Scouting forms bonds of friendship which can last a lifetime" said Tony Claydon, Group Scout Leader of the 11th/9th, "and we very much want to give our members, past and present, the opportunity to renew old friendships while celebrating our centenary." The records of the groups show names and former addresses of many past members – including one David Gilmour, of Pink Floyd fame. "We are very lucky to have so many old records,” said Brian Smith, formerly a scout with the group and now a member of the committee, "and it would be wonderful to be able to add any reminiscences people have from their days in the group.".

Former members of the 2nd, the 9th, the 11th or the 11th/9th are warmly invited to the Scout and Guide Centre, Chedworth Street, Newnham on Saturday 15th May from 2:30pm onwards. Afternoon tea will be served, historical records will be on display and children's activities will be provided. The organisers would appreciate being contacted in advance by anyone planning to attend in order to help with catering: please email centenary@newnhamscouts.org.uk or write to Tony Claydon, Group Scout Leader, 132 Cromwell Road, Cambridge CB1 3EG.

Over the weekend of 11th & 12th September we will be holding a group / family camp at the county campsite, Little Abington. Former members are welome to drop in or bring a tent and camp for the weekend. (If camping doesn't appeal, we have details of some local accommodation!) During the weekend we plan to have various activities available for all present to have a go. On the Saturday evening there will be a barbecue and campfire. If you would like some more details about the weekend, please email centenary@newnhamscouts.org.uk or write to Tony Claydon, Group Scout Leader, 132 Cromwell Road, Cambridge CB1 3EG.
