Scouts and Explorers summer camp 2012
Our summer camp this year was a 5 day long camp in the Lake District. We were camping next to Lake Windermere. We arrived on the Saturday and found our campsite to be a muddy hill side, nethertheless we set up our camp and made a fire which took some preparing as most of the wood was wet!
Our camp was a mix of both the new Explorers Unit and the already existing Scout Troop. Over the next 5 days we had a lot of rain! Typical of the English Lakes, but we also did lots of exciting activities. The explorers did canyoning, kayaking, raft building and a couple of drop hikes. All the water based activities were done on Lake Windermere. The scouts did rock climbing, canoeing and caving as well as some hikes too. We did one activity together which was shelter building. We had nothing and were told to build a shelter from what we could find in the forest so we did and they turned out to be really good. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to sleep in our shelters but it was a fun thing to do and useful if we ever do a survival camp in the future.
We had a try at catching lobsters as we had done it on last year’s summer camp in Dorset; we caught 2 lobsters in Lulworth Cove. Unfortunately this time we only caught crabs and all of them were too small to eat, but it was great fun and the beach was really cool.
Our Scout and Explorer group has a habit of trying to invest people in cool ways so on this camp we invested one person in a kayak on Lake Windermere and another on the top of a hillside crag with views of the Lake District all around us. Then there was the long drive back to Cambridge and of course all the washing up! Everyone’s favourite part!
